We all worry about something to a degree, it’s perfectly natural. There are bills to pay, what’s going on at work, the journey to and from work, relationships to handle, the car isn’t running properly, the cat is going to the vets, things to do around the house and the list goes on.
In most cases we take these things in our stride but the problems start occurring when the stresses and strains of life start taking over. This is when the anxiety starts to affect how we feel, how we behave and we start to have actual physical symptoms.
Why do some people cope while others struggle?
Are you relaxed about your big day? If you are not, you are not alone: The build-up to the day, the wedding day itself and the honeymoon create varying degrees of worry for most couples, and for their families and friends too. So what is the answer?
“Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision.” - Muhammad Ali
"It's the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen." - Muhammad Ali
“There is no room in your mind for negative thoughts. The busier you keep yourself with the particulars of shot assessment and execution, the less chance your mind has to dwell on the emotional. This is sheer intensity.” - Jack Nicklaus
In many areas of life confidence is an important determinant of how we will perform: Believe and there is a better chance that you will succeed. However many overlook this and neglect to train their minds or rewire how they think. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you don’t have to train your body or practise hard but individuals or teams who have a belief in their ability tend to perform better.
Fear of flying can strike anyone even if they have flown many times before. Take Dennis Bergkamp for example, an extremely talented Dutch footballer who had travelled extensively in his career but he decided that flying was not for him after experiencing an engine cutting out on the plane he was on. Although his reaction is understandable it earned him the nickname of the non-flying Dutchman!
Although this was a frightening experience for Dennis it is likely that he has had scary moments when he has been driving and I suspect he still travels by road. The reason for this is that as he travelled more extensively by car, and because he probably needs to do so to fulfil his daily routines, his subconscious mind has evaluated the risk and set in place the thought that travel by road is acceptably ‘safe’.
